Unless things change, a majority of students will spend 4 years and a boatload of money, pass a national board exam, pass a pmlexis exam, do a residency and then be considered by many of their professional peers to be unfit to practice. 

Maybe that realization has caused a mental short-circuit, rendering them speechless.
